Building in the Perth hills is always a tricky proposition and this gable carport, entertaining extension certainly had our install team thinking outside the box.
The owners of this home wanted to cover their caravan and car from the elements.
They also wanted to create an extension of the existing gable patio at the rear of the home to have a completely uninterrupted space.
When our design consultant met with the property owners he could see that this would require a bit of extra work to make the proposed design work.
The height of the caravan had to be taken into consideration, with that the overall height also needed to match the existing rear gable patio and then there was also how to incorporate the curved limestone wall at the end of the patio.
With the height of the existing gable taken and then compared to the height required to cover the caravan, we needed to use crank gable trusses to allow the caravan to have some manoeuvrability in and out of this new space.
The second part of the build was dealing with the curved wall as it wrapped around to the rear of the home.
The original design was to step the gable patio in to match the wall then use the hip and valley design to continue the new patio to the existing gable.
After a bit more thought and a few discussions with the owners the final design was to keep the full gable width all down the carport side then allow for the hip and valley to tie back into the existing gable.
In order to deal with the curved wall, the patio posts were set back in under the patio and this would still make sure that no posts were in the driveway for access to the rear of the home.
With the gable now running the full width, it certainly looks quite neat and also provides a small cover for the stairs.
A new box gutter was installed along the house side and we also replaced the existing downpipes with oversized 100mm x 100mm Colorbond® downpipes.
These oversized downpipes provide a larger diameter to help release water from the box gutter.
Colorbond® Classic Cream was selected to match the home and to also keep the space feeling light and bright. A few polycarbonate skylights were also included in Diffused Ice, these also allow a bit of extra light to filter through into the home.
The completed carport and patio extension has really made a difference to this space and looks fantastic.
